Cricket has roots in Bangladesh dating back to the 18th century, but organized tournaments began in the 1950s, when the region was East Pakistan. Bangladesh played its first ODI in 1986 and qualified for the 1999 World Cup, beating Pakistan in a major upset. In 2000, they became a Test-playing nation. Despite early struggles, they won their first Test in 2005 and later achieved significant wins against England, Australia, and Pakistan. Players like Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, and Tamim Iqbal led their rise, making cricket the most popular sport in the country.
